Epilepsy in the Elderly
Stonehouse Media helps leading medical publisher deliver content via electronic media
U.S. physicians, nurses and pharmacists are learning how to better diagnose and treat epilepsy in the elderly, thanks to a new program developed jointly by Stonehouse Media Incorporated® and Advanstar Communications, Inc., a worldwide media company.
Titled "Seizure Disorders in the Elderly," the program is available on VHS, DVD and on a complementary Web site.
The cooperative effort, led by the publisher of Geriatrics, made possible the distribution of this important continuing education program to physicians, nurses and pharmacists via a variety of electronic media. The result? The program is available to them worldwide, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Viewers can test themselves online … and even print out certificates
Especially valuable for those working in long-term care settings, the multi-media program makes it easy for health care professionals to log onto the Web site 24/7, review the materials, take a test and even print out their education certificates online.
The video, shot in widescreen format at Capital Health System in Trenton, includes interviews with recognized medical experts, plus interactive programs and case studies.
1 location, many different looks
To save money and shoot in just one location, a Stonehouse Media set designer redecorated the various areas to serve as doctor's offices, exam spaces and living rooms in the video.
The multi-set shots surprised even people who watched part of it being filmed. "Whoa …," they said upon seeing the final product. "That was shot there"?
The program includes definitions, classification and causes of epilepsy; diagnosis, treatment, management of seizure emergencies and patient quality of life. It can be viewed in about one hour.
The e-learning CME/CE activity was a joint effort of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center, University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, the Epilepsy Foundation and CME2, the educational division of Advanstar Communications, Inc. The activity was supported by an unrestricted grant from UCB Pharma.
With over 50% of doctors' offices now having access to broadband, the use of the Web for continuing medical education is expected to increase dramatically.
Note: The promotion and reporting of this program adhere to CME guidelines.

Online CFI Training
Fire investigators flock to innovative Web site
A Web site designed to improve global fire investigation has provided 10,828 hours of education for 7,567 users in its first 14 months of operation.
That's probably why the Department of Homeland Security's Web site lauded CFITrainer.net for providing "high-quality, cost-effective training …"
CFITrainer.net is a cooperative effort of the International Association of Arson Investigators, Inc. (IAAI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Insurance Committee for Arson Control. Stonehouse Media, which worked with IAAI to develop the network, branding and content, also furnishes the delivery platform and supports daily operations.
Stonehouse Media's key value, says company president Rod Ammon, is helping the IAAI share its vast expertise worldwide – while presenting consistent programming with exceptional production values that attract and engage audiences.
Learning at work or home …without costly travel expenses
The site is designed for IAAI members, as well those who simply want to keep up to date in this rapidly changing field. Viewers can interact with presenters at live Webinars or review archived versions.
A new module analyzes the deadly Rhode Island Station Nightclub fire that killed over 100 people in 2003. The powerful program includes photos, an overview, timeline, reconstruction, fire simulation, reading list, skills challenge and more.
Stonehouse Media's learning management system allows it to analyze users' clicks on CFITrainer.net, view where people leave a session, and use this data in designing future programs.
Top Takeaways
- Participants can test skills and get certified online - without traveling.
- Online tracking system helps analyze activity and improve future content.
- A soon-to-be-released CFI Calculator, downloadable to a Pocket PC or Palm, will allow users to do complex on-the-spot fire calculations.
